Breath Ammonia Detection in Patients with Schizophrenia Using Laser Photoacoustic Spectroscopy

چکیده
Over the years schizophrenia become a challenging disorder in the understanding of its causes, course and treatment. The processes for the causes of neuropsychiatric disturbances in schizophrenia are still not completely known. Investigating metabolic changes in schizophrenia is important to capture valuable insights about mechanisms, progression, and diagnostic biomarkers. Priority of investigation in any patient with psychiatric presentation is recommended to be ammonia. We used CO2 laser photoacoustic spectroscopy method to analyze breath ammonia levels in 15 patients with schizophrenia that not withdrawn from their usual medication and 13 control subjects without schizophrenia. Breath ammonia concentrations were evaluated and compared between study group and the group with schizophrenia. The interesting observation is that the breath ammonia levels of patients with schizophrenia are clearly increased compared with healthy subjects. The measurements of breath ammonia presented here demonstrate the quality of breath analyses that can be achieved using CO2 laser photoacoustic spectroscopy method. Breath ammonia analysis might offer a new approach to the detection of schizophrenia and better understanding of the metabolic basis of this disorder.

Real time ammonia detection in exhaled human breath using a distributed feedback quantum cascade laser based sensor
A continuous wave, thermoelectrically cooled, distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) based sensor platform for the quantitative detection of ammonia (NH3) concentrations present in exhaled human breath is reported. The NH3 concentration measurements are performed with a 2f wavelength modulation quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) technique, which is very well suited...

متن کاملBreath ammonia levels in a normal human population study as determined by photoacoustic laser spectroscopy.
Photoacoustic laser spectroscopy was used as a technique to measure real-time levels of ammonia in exhaled human breath in a small, locally recruited, normal healthy population (n = 30). This yielded an average level of breath ammonia of 265 ppb, ranging from 29 to 688 ppb. Although average levels were marginally higher in male volunteers, this was not statistically significant. In addition, no...

A device for measuring human breath ammonia was developed based on a single use, disposable, inkjet printed ammonia sensor fabricated using polyaniline nanoparticles. The device was optimized for sampling ammonia in human breath samples by addressing issues such as variations in breath sample volume, flow rate, sources of oral ammonia, temperature and humidity. The resulting system was capable ...
متن کاملAmmonia monitoring at trace level using photoacoustic spectroscopy in industrial and environmental applications.
An ammonia traces analyser based on photoacoustic spectroscopy is described. The system uses a CO(2) laser and a properly designed resonant photoacoustic cell to achieve ammonia detection at sub-parts-per-billion (ppb) level. The instrument features unattended automatic on-line monitoring of ammonia with a detection limit of 0.1 ppb. Interferences from atmospheric CO(2) and H(2)O are efficientl...
